Despairing

Autumn brings with it  more cold and  more rain, and a reminder that another year is quickly approaching its ending. Holidays bear down on us with the expectations of joyful Christmas surrounded by family and friends. The expectations are often too much to bear when one is alone, when one is despairing of loss, when one is despairing of the ending of the world as previously known.

Here are some poems I have written with the theme of despair:

DYING EMBER

Jasmine scented September morning; heat lingers at the edge of summer’s dying.

Not defeated this clinging summer sizzling-hanging on, refusal to quit.

At the bottom of my dark tunnel,

I struggle to glimpse the warmth waning like a dying ember.

LONE SOUL

Despairing of being forgotten by a moving, advancing world.

Alone on a crowded planet. Drowning in the emptiness, reaching for the wind, anticipating rescue,

lone soul whispering, “save me from this nothingness.”

LOOSE CHANGE

Monday is forever gone; I am not sure if it ever really existed,

or if it is I who have gone away.

I move through time and space and know that I cannot hold onto any of this; I know that it will all blink itself away.

What to do with this restlessness, with dreams I carry like loose change in the bottom of my purse?

During this holiday season reach out to someone who is alone. Not everyone has family; not everyone has happy memories of the holidays. Depression increases during the darker, colder days of autumn and winter. This is a lonely planet. Reach out and make it less lonely.

Blessings.

I am a published poet and short story writer. I have been published in SNHU's the penmen review. https://penmenreview.com/author/jenny-andrews is the link where you can find my poetry and a short story. Previously, I self-published my novel "Bully Another Day," "Short Stories and Vignettes", and a poetry book "Spaces between the Pause" on Amazon/Kindle. Due to abysmal interest in my self-publishing venture, I have unpublished those three projects, as well as my poetry book "Life at the End of the Rainbow." However, I plan to be more aggressive in trying to find a traditional publisher for these projects.

    1. Hi Harper,
Thank you for your kind comment. Poetry is my passion. Like with Athena and others, I have struggled with finding full-time work with my Masters Degree in English and Creative Writing, but writing is a passion. I write because I love it. I love sharing my writing techniques with others. I have even self-published a poetry book “Life at the End of the Rainbow” on Amazon Books.
If you get a chance, please let me know what you think of my poetry book. Thanks so much.
      Happy Thanksgiving.
      Jenny

      1. Thank you, Harper. As far as poetry techniques, I try to use the Imagist style of poetry. My favorite Imagist poets are William Carlos Williams and Amy Lowell. I particularly like the simplicity and preciseness of Imagist poetry. The images are concrete. Writing is a process so I spend a lot of time rewriting until I get each word just like I like it (sometimes it isn’t quite what I want but I keep trying).
        Thanks for reading!

      2. It’s a very personal, emotional thing. It took me 3 days to write less than 4000 words. It’s still not right but I’d been in labor to long. Time to give birth

  1. Thank you, Harper. As far as poetry techniques, I like the Imagist style of Amy Lowell and William Carlos Williams. The language has concrete images and uses precise language. A really good website is https://www.poetryfoundation.org. The Poetry Foundation has very useful information about poetry, poets and techniques. I am always trying to learn how to make my writing more precise. (Sometimes I succeed; sometimes I have to go back to the drawing board).
    I love the creative process.
    Thanks for reading!
